JPEG errors on startup

I am running Slackware 3.4, and I have been trying to install E.  I have
updated all of my graphic libs and compiled imlib without problems. I
compiled E, and when i try to load it, X dies with an error "unable to
resolve jpeg_std_error"  

Does anyone know what might be causing this?
