Warning: I'm an E-newbie. Worse yet, I'm a Linux and X newbie. Fear
my questions, but please forgive my ignorance.
Good news: I got it working on my own, but I want to verify with the
gurus here that what I did won't mess up other stuff on my system.
Read on for the full story.
OS info: RedHat 5.0 (non-commercial). I've compiled a custom kernel
to include support for SMP (dual PPro 200 MHz), but I haven't
otherwise mucked with the default configuration (much). Previous WM
was the default fvwm95. X server is XFree86. I haven't configured
sound support yet, but I do have an SB AWE PnP installed. I assume
hardware details are mostly irrelevant to Enlightenment.
Enlightenment version: DR 0.14, plus the newest versions of all the
libraries it requires that I could find, all installed via RPM.
(Except Esound, which only comes tar.gz AFAICT.)
The story:
Ok, so despite the fact that I'm a newbie, I decided to give this E
thing a try, because fvwm95 (as configured with RedHat 5.0) just
wasn't cutting it. I went through some hassles of figuring out what
to download and where, and installing various packages. I got E
compiled.
It didn't run. Linkage problems, of course.
I had some old versions of some of the libraries installed, and RPM
didn't install over them, but rather left both versions on.
Unfortunately, I'm not at my machine now, and I didn't keep good track
of what I was doing anyway, so I can't tell you exactly which ones,
nor what versions. I'm fairly certain that libpng was one of the
problems. So in /usr/lib, and I had something like this:
libpng.so.0
This was a symbolic link to something like:
libpng.so.0.x.x.x (like I said, I don't know the exact versions right
now)
I also had:
libpng.so.2
which linked to
libpng.so.2.x.x.x
E complained about the incorrect version of libpng, so I brute-forced
it: I changed libpng.so.0 to point to the new libpng (2.whatever),
and that seemed to work. I had to do it for a couple of other libs,
too.. Eventually, it worked.
(Well, let's not talk about the troubles I had with figuring out how
to safely change my wm and then change it back. I messed up quite a
few config files in the process, and I'm not quite back up to snuff
yet. Sigh.)
Now, I haven't yet had a chance to go through my other stuff to see if
it still runs. Anybody here care to make a prediction? Anybody here
care to suggest a better way to solve the problem?
Like I said, I can't give much more detail than I already have, since
I didn't keep track of everything I did -- I just fiddled with this
and that until it worked, and then went to bed after playing around
for a bit. (And I must say, E looks really fricken cool. I'm still
reserving judgement on functionality until I figure it all out. The
sliding desktops rock, though.) However, if anybody needs any
additional system information, just ask. Try to provide at least
basic instructions on how I should find the info, too.
Thanks,
Randy Nortman
