>From Dec. 26, 2000 issue of IBD:

"Japan slashes huge public works in reaction
to surge in public ire

Under fire for wasting a fortune when the country's economy is
struggling, Japan's government moved this month to slash hundreds
of useless public-works projects and reinvest the money in
technology development and other priority sectors. But critics
say the cuts mostly involve high-profile projects already
singled out as wasteful and don't even begin to rectify
the problem."

Despite the USD index (USD vs a basket of currencies) closing
down on Friday, the Yen closed down vs the USD.
