It basically boils down to a sales job.  The PR hacks for the politicians
(ie. the public education system) have "sold" the populace on the idea that
the benefits they now enjoy come at the "price" of high taxation.  When in
reality, the benefits would be even greater without it.

It might be better to look at it in terms of security versus freedom.  A
prison inmate has the ultimate in security - he gets three meals a day, has
a roof over his head, and strong walls around him.  His future is secure.

The American and British populations have sold their birthright of liberty
for the security of the government taking care of them.  The politicians and
school systems have sold them on the idea that security = wealth.  That is
the lie.
