I come close to having a heart attack whenever the reds start talking about
how much check-cashing places charge poor people. They don't understand that
the reason it's so expensive is that there are enormous costs and risks
involved. It's one of the most competitive markets out there--some poor
neighborhoods have three or four of those places on the same block!--so if
someone could do it cheaper, they most certainly would.

The socialist "solution" to the problem would be to nationalize the
check-cashing industry. Poor people could have checks cashed for a very
small fee (or for free!) and the taxpayers would be forced to pick up the
tab when the checks bounce, as many of them do now and most of them would
under a government-run system. I doubt if a socialist would even consider
E-Gold because it's a non-Big Brother solution.
