As odd as it sounds, you are correct, in essense. In the Metric System, the gram is a unit of mass, and the Newton is a unit of Force, (or Weight). In the English system, the Pound is a unit of Force, (or Weight), and the Slug is the unit of mass. So, when identifying your holding by 'grams', you are specifying a unit of mass. When identifying your holding by 'ounces', you are specifying a unit of weight. The reality, however, is that one troy ounce of gold would still be one troy ounce of gold, even if it was in a weightless environment. When people speak of weight in this fashion, they do indeed, mean the mass of the gold that would weigh one troy ounce on Earth.
