RE Paypal, run away, fast.
The fastest way to get gold into your account is to find someone who
already has some and sell them something. This is not meant as a joke,
but rather to state the way gold is intended to be used. It doesn't
address the problem you mention, but it has worked for me.

This points out the whole privacy issue with banks. The reason is that
anyone may easily obtain your account number and routing number from your
checks, and this is all that is technically needed to wire funds. The
bank will not accept the risk, hence they must place this barrier to avoid
fraud. It's strange when you consider that the money in the bank has so
little backing it...
Once you have some gold, the delay in future funding will become less
important. Plus you can begin to establish a relationship with a market
maker who may then offer quicker service.
