JP!  I don't think there's much confusion, only resolution.  I think Sidd
has hit the nail on the head.

The exported private key block has the password cryptologically "folded"
into it.  Therefore, the private key cannot be used without the password
even if you import it into a keyring on another computer.

I ran a simple test that affirmed this.  First I exported my private key.
Then I changed my passphrase and exported it again.  Indeed, the private key
blocks were different.  (Of course, the public key blocks remained the
same.)

This discussion clears up my fundamental misunderstanding.  I thought that
the gibberish in the private key block WAS the private key.  It's not.  It's
the private key encrypted WITH a specific password.  That's why the private
key block changes when you change the password.

I doubt there's any way to actually see THE private key, free and clear of
all password encryption.  That would be a dangerous feature with no
legitimate use.
