Hello there, In my experience e-gold is rather reliable. However, you'd be limiting your market potential if you 'only' accept payments in that way. By the same token, have a look at www.paypalwarning.com; I tend to believe everything you'll read there, because it happened to us as well.
Of course, there are also several other ways to sell your goods. Ebay comes to mind. And there are several other e-currency providers, albeit we have only ever dealt with e-gold and hence I can't recommend any of the others specifically. Further [*sales plug warning*], you might want to have a look at www.cyfrocash.com We can help you to actually accept payments from the US, Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia in a variety of ways, ranging from personla cheques to bank deposits and money orders as well as, in some cases, credit cards [tangible goods and established customers, only]. [*end sales plug*] Oh, and you might want to have a look at www.2checkout.com for accepting credit cards through them. I'm not sure if they accept clients from South Africa, though. Of course, if your budget permits it, you could incorporate a company in the US and get a bank account for that company and customers could then pay to that account. Doesn't cost the world and adds a 'trust the locals' factor if you expect that the US will be a large market for your products. That's all I can think of right now.
