We only validate the latest firmware with the latest driver. I would think that using a newer driver with older firmware might work, but using a newer firmware with an older driver sounds less likely to work well.
Keep in mind that we're releasing new bug fixes with the newer drivers and firmware and I would strongly suggest you update both. In any case, we only guarantee the latest firmware with the latest driver and, as they say, YMMV.
