These versions (4.4.0-1000 and up on AWS) are official Ubuntu
kernels tailored for the AWS environment, so they're not "custom" in the
sense of being from a source other than the distro.
These kernels correspond to the linux-image-4.4.0-1000-aws (and
up) packages.
