"Auto-disconnect" came from this .. USB sub-system assumes that the hub
disabled on the port ...
The other problem comes from USb re-emmission I think .. Which kernel
are you running ?

2.4.28, compiled from myself ...

problem was also happening using 2.4.27, but i don't remember it
happened with 2.4.26.

may it comes from kernel usb subsystem ?

I have receive an usb patch for 2.4.28 which solve some problem on 2.4.28
specifically but I think your problem could be elsewhere (usb hardware)
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/ipcop/ipcop/src/patches/Attic/linux-2.4.28-usb-devio.patch?rev=1.1.2.1&only_with_tag=IPCOP_v1_4_0&view=log

what is you usb controller?
lspci -n | grep 0c03

usb-uhci controller PIIX3 Class 0c03: PCI device 8086:7020 has bugs
usb-uhci controller Class 0c03: PCI device 1106:3038 (rev 2)VT82xxxxx UHCI
USB 1.1 Controller is not better
