I continue to reply here cause we are talking about Gentoo even if it's a different question, hope you don't mind... Well, I put the inist script in the default runlevel, so I'm always connected since I boot up my box. But if sometimes (due to ISP problems) the modem cannot sync or PP could not be bringed up, there's a way to manually stop it, during boot time?
