A few more new facts... I had a hard time to reproduce the problem : the best solutions seems to try doing something usefull... :-)
In fact, the last occurrence of the problem was quite severe : about 15 minutes to switch to the console, 5 minutes to login root, and a timeout on the USB so that ppp0 was down - and the system was still almost blocked. A few tests on the ethernet interface : I can check it with ifconfig, send packets (Arp), but not receive packats. So, I turned down eth0 : the system was immediately more responsive. Then, rmmod the ethernet driver (8139too), stopadsl, turned up eth0, and startadsl : everything works fine (until I try to do something usefull through Ethernet, I presume). I definitely think that the real culprit is the ethernet driver. I have seen that the 2.6.9 kernel include a bunch of fixes to this driver, so I have to check it first... -- Gilles Berger Sabbatel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
