A few more new facts...

I had a hard time to reproduce the problem : the best solutions seems to
try doing something usefull... :-)

In fact, the last occurrence of the problem was quite severe : about 15
minutes to switch to the console, 5 minutes to login root, and a timeout
on the USB so that ppp0 was down - and the system was still almost
blocked.

A few tests on the ethernet interface : I can check it with ifconfig,
send packets (Arp), but not receive packats.

So, I turned down eth0 : the system was immediately more responsive. 
Then, rmmod the ethernet driver (8139too), stopadsl, turned up eth0, and
startadsl : everything works fine (until I try to do something usefull
through Ethernet, I presume).

I definitely think that the real culprit is the ethernet driver.  I have
seen that the 2.6.9 kernel include a bunch of fixes to this driver, so I
have to check it first...
