Yup, modern Macs can handle any USB mouse.

I've not used MacOS 9 or below, but MacOS X supports two buttons and
scroll-wheels (better than Windoze).

Sadly not, Ctrl-click remains tied to 'right-button' - on my TiBook, I can
use the built-in trackpad and single button simultaneously with an USB mouse
(different accelerations and double-click timings for each).
With true plug-and-play on USB mice it would be very hard to map/unmap
Ctrl-click.
The stupid decision to have only one button on the TiBook nearly put me off,
but
the four hour battery life and NeXT-based OS swayed me back again!
