In TextPad, some of the dialogs (most noticably the search dialog) render semi-transparent when they lose focus to the editor, though I cannot imagine how this could be implemented in Java. I've not heard of any function to do this.
Maybe it'd be worth having an option to shrink the dialog to the title bar on focus
loss, re-expanding on focus gain or perhaps on mouse over.
