Perhaps I've missed something here...
Doesn't <ctrl>+<F3> first select the word you are standing on (unless you are at the 
very end of the word), and then you have to press <F3> to step forward in your quest 
for next occurance?
I have no problem pressing <shift>+<F3> to search backwards for the previous 
occurance. A quite logical key combination IMHO.
