I still think the most elegant solution I've ever used is the MSDEV version, which uses Ctrl-Tab/Shift-Ctrl-Tab to cycle through windows forward and backwards, according to an LRU algorithm.
Sorta-similar to the Windows Alt-Tab/Alt-Shift-Tab task switching. Ctrl-E sorta-kinda provides a list of files in LRU order, but it's difficult to cycle and awkward to use (with requiring that you hit ENTER all the time). If I could just use Ctrl-E to flip back and forth between the two most recently used files, and hold down Ctrl while continuing to press E to go back further (and selecting the file when I let up on Ctrl), that would be great too. The "menu" that pops up could work like the Alt-Tab task-switching window, with the file about to be switched to highlighted, staying on the screen only for as long as the ctrl is held down. That would work. Or at the very least, add numbers to the files, so that it works like the "Surround With" menu, so I can go straight to the file I want, without having to muck with the mouse, the arrow keys, or the enter key!
