I also want this, but not in the lists themselves - to much clutter for 
a sometimes used (but sorely needed) feature.

I'm looking at several options where to put the package description: 

1. In the status message - the same where the menu item descriptions go.
2. A tooltip on the entry itself.
3. A control-q option to show the javadoc - what about the mouse? 
control+mouseover?

I think that showing a status message with the package is the less 
intrusive of all, while being always accessible when needed.

And this feature should be used anywhere class/file choosers are used:

Code completion, control-n, editor list, recent files list, ...
