Yes, sure that's the reason. "msg instanceof FinalizationMessage" does not form any expression inside "!msg instanceof FinalizationMessage" because it should be read as "(!msg) instanceof FinalizationMessage", not as "!(msg instanceof FinalizationMessage)".
