As far as I know the "*" on a tab indicates a file has been modified but not yet saved to disk. But today I saw a readonly file that had a "*" on its tab, even though I had never edited that file, and (after closing the tab) I verified that the file was still marked readonly and NT file modification date was still the original old date. There were no exceptions showing in the console.
