We had this issue in the pre 2.5.x EAP - around build #417 or so.
File synch just took forever. Idea got slow. The project had at this stage
around 600 classes and 800 jsp sniplets.

We decided to check out IBM JDK and this went way better. Later stages I
disabled "Synchronize files on frame activation" ... actually not an option
for the long run.
Also you may increase inital HEAP for your VM.

But again. Use IBM JDK on linux.

PS: As far as I remember the issue is the linux file system, which does not
support "notification" of file changes.

Subject: RE: [Eap-list] 2.5.1: Could not open project under linux

Update:
2.5.1 is regularly freezing under this configuration (Mandrake 8.1/KDE).
I'm guessing that this is occurring during the file synch process (just
because this is the only native code).
When it freezes, we sometimes use xkill, and we sometimes use kill. We
suspect "kill -9" may result in the situation described below, where the
restarted IDEA cannot open any projects unless we restart linux. But we
still have to confirm this.
Is there a way to disable the native filewatcher, as a temporary workaround?

version 2.5.1
Mandrake 8.1
KDE

1. Switched to IDEA from a console window, and the program was frozen (no
repaints)
2. Shut down IDEA
3. When IDEA was restarted, I could not open an existing project.
After selecting the .ipr file in the file dialog and clicking OK, nothing
happens. I can still use the menus though. Trying to creating a new
project will result in IDEA freezing after the "Finish" button is clicked.
We tried removing the system/cache directory, and removing all our IDEA
config files (under config/options). This didn't fix it.
After rebooting Linux, it worked again.
