it fails on downloading pip-1.1, although the pypi url works for me.

can you
wget http://pypi.python.org/packages/source/p/pip/pip-1.1.tar.gz
(and if this works, either try again, EB should be able to download it as well; or just put the tarbal in it's location (probably in /share/easybuild//src/p/Python/extensions/pip-1.1.tar.gz)
