I'm trying to go for your option 1), see my other mail about the
problems I'm having there.

It would be helpful if the documentation on readthedocs contained a
small section "Updating an existing easybuild installation", just giving
the options you mention.

Would you consider a PR I could prepare to include this in the
documentation?
