Mr.Lee:
It's a good question: it's difficult to verify that the encryption
between two echoWare endpoints is active, as it's meant to be
invisible to the higher-level application. That is, you shouldn't be
able to tell in VNC that the actual data between the Viewer and
Server is being encrypted.
One indirect way is to look at the .log file created by EchoVNC.
It will log whether the encryption is active or inactive. A more direct
way is to install Ethereal on either the Viewer or Server PC, and look
for the "RFB" response from the VNC Server when you establish
the connection. If you turn encryption off in EchoVNC, you should
see it in a 12-byte packet at the start of the connection; if you turn
it
back on, you'll see a packet in the same place, but the content will
(hopefully) be obscured.
Lastly, the 1.1 release of echoWinVNC uses (I think), the 1.60
version of the echoWare DLL. That version needs the libeay32
DLL installed separately in order for OpenSSL to be active. The
1.70 DLL (used in EchoVNC 1.40) has the openssl code "built in".
We'll be releasing the 1.80 DLL soon, and re-release both EchoVNC
and echoWinVNC to use it.
hope that helps,
Scott
I set up EchoVNC, EchoServer, and EchoWinVNC on two
Windows XP computers without any problems. My
question is how can I ensure the connection is secure?
I have "Use 128-bit AES encryption" selected under
EchoVNC, but when viewing the VNC Connection Info, the
Security Method is "None" and Encryption is "No
Encryption".
I'm using EchoVNC version 1.40, EchoServer version
1.40, and EchoWinVNC version 1.1.
Thanks!
Hin Lee
