Kylie writes to Al: >>if we accept that we need your 'help' then we don't end the patriarchial >>system. we are strong enough, intelligent enough, numerous enough and >>simply enough. Agree. And if we accept that we need men's 'help,' we buy the idea that there is something intrinsically inferior or incomplete about women. As women, we then continue the oppression from within. As long as the internalized oppressor is at work in individual women we cannot recognize or take hold of equality no matter how much things change on the outside. In terms of the environment, how can I tell when I am patronizing and arrogant in my environmental "help" and how does that arrogance keep me from getting into an equal relationship with the environment/earth? How are blockades (on logging roads, native land claim sites, union operated businesses, abortion clinics, et al) any different than the power tactics used in any dominator system? Everyone thinks their cause is "right". What place does civil disobedience play in environmental work? I'm a person with more questions than answers. I believe dominator societies are deeply systemic and it is only in asking questions in a public forum that I gain the insight to try another way. It is the only way I see my own "dis-eased" thinking. L. A related petition is also attached below, and should be returned to the Defense Committee as well. ******************************************************************* FREEDOM FOR NORMA JEAN CROY Norma Jean Croy, an American Indian, is serving a life sentence for a crime which she is not guilty of committing. Chronological Outline: July 1978, Yreka (Siskiyou County) Norma Jean Croy and her brother, Patrick Hooty Croy and three other relatives stopped at a convenience store before going hunting near their grandmother's cabin outside of town. Following an altercation started by the store clerk, Yreka police chased their car as they headed out of town. When the car stopped at the cabin and as Norma and her companions ran away, police opened fire, hitting Norma in the back. Norma's cousin Darrell was also shot as he stood up to surrender. Norma's brother Hooty was shot in the back twice before he turned and fired one shot from the ..22 hunting rifle, which struck an officer in the heart. 1979 (Placer County) Norma and her four companions were charged with first degree murder of the police officer and related offenses. Their case was transferred to Placer County for trial because of the the pretrial publicity. Norma and her brother Hooty were convicted on all counts although there was no evidence that Norma fired any weapon. Hooty was sentenced to death; Norma to life in prison. 1985 Reversal (California Supreme Court) Hooty's conviction was reversed by the California Supreme Court. Norma's appeal was denied by a lower appellate court. 1990 Hooty's Retrial (San Francisco) Following change of venue to San Francisco, Hooty Croy was acquitted of murder on grounds of self-defense. Trial judge states; "...had Norma Jean Croy been tried in the case I heard, she would have been found not guilty." 1992 Norma's Fifth Parole Hearing Norma is denied parole for the fifth time. Parole board refuses to hear evidence of her innocence that had been presented at Hooty's retrial. HELP NORMA JEAN GET OUT OF PRISON The injustice Norma has received was confirmed when her brother was released from prison, after it was proven that he fired in self defense. She can never receive true justice because she can never be given back the time she has wrongly served. But she can now receive a new trial and be released from prison.
