Just a reminder that our meeting to plan a National Community
Research Network is taking place in Amherst, Massachusetts next
week, July 19-21, 1996. There will be about 50 attendees from
across the U.S. (plus one each from the Netherlands and Canada).
The meeting is co-sponsored by the Loka Institute, UMass
Extension and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Program in
Science, Technology & Society.
We will be posting summaries from the conference here on the
scishops listserv in near-real time as the conference is
underway. In turn, we will share your replies with all
conference attendees. Please join us online!

In Planning a National System, July 19-21, 1996!
Friends and Colleagues:
The Loka Institute's initiative to develop a National
Community Research Network (NCRN) is moving forward
energetically. Members of Loka's NCRN advisory board, plus
additional grassroots representatives, will be attending a
national planning meeting for the NCRN on July 19-21, 1996, in
Amherst, Massachusetts.
Currently, the vast majority of U.S. research is designed to
advance agendas defined by corporations, the military, or elite
academic scientists. In contrast, we envision the NCRN as an
alternative research system that will conduct participatory
research in response to concerns raised by grassroots groups,
workers, public-interest organizations, and local governments.
YOU CAN PARTICIPATE IN THIS IMPORTANT CONFERENCE VIA THE
INTERNET: During the NCRN planning conference (July 19-21, 1996),
we plan to post summaries of our face-to-face discussion in near-
real time to Loka's community research listserv. We will, in
turn, share all responses that we receive from the listserv with
conference attendees. Your ideas and experience will make a real
difference in the plans we develop, so please do participate--and
invite other interested people to join in! WE ARE EAGER
ESPECIALLY TO ENCOURAGE THE BROADEST POSSIBLE INVOLVEMENT AMONG
GROUPS CURRENTLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN DEFINING AND PURSUING
RESEARCH AGENDAS--of all kinds (i.e., including humanities,
social science, natural science, and engineering).
