The Northwest Regional Consortium for Southeast Asian Studies
announces its seventh conference on the theme of
"Interwoven Identities: Southeast Asia in the Greater Asia-Pacific Community"
The 1997 conference of the Northwest Regional Consortium for Southeast
Asian Studies will have the theme of Interwoven Identities: Southeast
Asia in the Greater Asia-Pacific Community. Potential participants are
invited to submit proposals for panels and papers on topics which relate
to the following subjects and include one or more Southeast Asian
country: (1) contemporary issues such as the environment, women,
development or democracy and their implications; (2) regionalization of
the economies of Asia (e.g. AFTA, APEC) and its consequences; (3)
historic or contemporary cultural ties such as religion, language, the
arts, or the impact of westernization.
Other panels and topics may also be proposed; however, those addressing
issues that cross traditional area studies boundaries will be given
preference.
The conference will be held on the campus of
the University of Oregon

April 25-27, 1997

the 1997 NWRCSEAS Conference at the University of Oregon.
The Northwest Consortium for Southeast Asian Studies was formed in 1987
by faculty members of the University of Oregon, the University of
Washington and the University of British Columbia. The consortium is
recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of only six
national resource centers on Southeast Asia in the U.S.
