Cynthia, when I tried to get into your web site
(www.lff.org) the address was not recognized.
Also, when I tried to get into the ad slick address you gave as
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" it was returned unknown, also.

Hope THIS gets to you! Do you know if there was an error in those
email/web addresses?

If you're interested in studying birds and plants on prairie dog
colonies in the western U.S., please read the announcement below.

     WILDLIFE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
     `NOMADIC BIRDERS/BOTANISTS'
     MAY - JULY 1997

TRAINING, HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION, AND $15/DAY PROVIDED

Research Project: Birds and vegetation associated with prairie dog
colonies in Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming: Why would a bird
     like a prairie dog?

Description: The research crew will move from one prairie dog complex
to the next every 1.5 - 2 weeks, eventually sampling 5 - 6 sites from
near the Grand Canyon, AZ to Shirley Basin, WY (both ferret
reintroduction sites). Volunteers will work in pairs to locate mapped
colonies, establish transects, sample birds and vegetation, and enter
collected data. We will begin and end the expedition from Fort
Collins, CO and camp on or near colonies in field trailers and tents,
sometimes in remote locations without running water, electricity, or
toilets. Bird sampling will begin before sunrise and vegetation
sampling will usually be done by mid-afternoon.

Requirements: Applicants should be competent at either bird or plant
ID, preferably both. This includes the ability to identify birds by
sight and sound and to key common plants to genus and species.
Knowledge of western shrub-steppe species a plus. Must have a
willingness to learn, teach, and maintain a good attitude, plus the
ability to walk across rough, but generally flat, terrain and work in
the hot sun. You will also need a drivers license. All ages and
     education levels considered.

Experience gained: You will gain practical experience on research
techniques, agency missions, vertebrate and habitat sampling, the
biology of prairie dog ecosystems, working as a team member, and group
     dynamics.

Location: BLM, Navajo Tribal, and other lands in the high elevation
deserts of nw AZ, ne UT, nw CO, and sw & sc WY. Depart and return
Fort Collins, CO. Closest airport DIA, Denver. Bus to Fort Collins.

Dates: Prefer 5 May to early July 1997. Some flexibility, depending
     on your needs.

Expenses: We pay $15/day (including weekends) to cover food and other
expenses. Field trailers (for cooking, eating, data entry, etc),
transportation (among study sites), and field gear are also provided.
You need binoculars, small tent, sleeping bag (we provide foam pad),
     and field clothes.

     Positions: 8 volunteers are needed.

What to expect: Expect dust, mud, wind, sunburn, fewer showers,
mornings filled with bird song, nights filled with snoring, dirty
dishes, biting bugs, rattlesnakes, wild horses, cows, coyotes, endless
dirt roads, making new friends with people, places, birds, plants, and
prairie dogs, time to explore new lands, and envy from your friends.

Positions open until filled. APPLY ASAP.
