FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
NEW RIVER SYMPOSIUM
Since New River was recently designated by President Clinton as an
American Heritage River, this will be the focal point of the New River
Symposium. WE CHALLENGE YOU TO SUBMIT A PAPER REFLECTING THE CULTURAL
AND NATURAL HERITAGE OF THE NEW RIVER. The National Park Service and the
West Virginia Division of Culture and History again are cosponsoring the
New River Symposium. The three-day biennial symposium, scheduled for
April 15-17, 1999, will be held at the Holiday Inn Express located in
Boone, North Carolina.
The multi-disciplinary Symposium is open to all those with a
professional or avocational interest in the New River, which courses
from its headwaters in North Carolina through Virginia to its terminus
in West Virginia, a distance of approximately 250 miles. Proposals for
special sessions, papers, and media presentations are welcome -- student
papers are most welcome. Papers for the Symposium are being requested in
natural and/or cultural history, folklore, archaeology, geography, other
natural, physical and social sciences, and the humanities. All papers
should share these common themes or the interrelationships of the
natural, physical, and/or human environments.
In order for proposals to be considered, they must be received no
later than December 1, 1998, and include a 250-400 word abstract which
will be reviewed by a panel of professionals.
All proposals should be sent to the Chief of Interpretation,
National Park Service, New River Gorge National River, P. O. Box 246,

In addition to the regular presentations, several other events are
scheduled. On the first day of the conference, we will be offering a New
River outing, a tour of the Appalachian Cultural Museum at the Center
for Appalachian Studies, and an evening social with musical
entertainment. The wrap-up sessions will include a one-day seminar
entitled "Sustainable Communities Training Workshop: The New River
Headwaters."
