Activists oppose DiCaprio film

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Environmentalists hope to sink Leonardo DiCaprio's
latest film shoot. Activists, local residents and hotel and tour operators
have lined up against 20th Century Fox's plans to film "The Beach" on Phi
Phi Island, 340 miles from Bangkok. They fear filming will harm Maya Beach.
Opponents say the film crew has removed the natural vegetation from the
beach and planted 93 coconut trees. Activists have said that will cause
erosion. They were in court Tuesday seeking an emergency injunction to halt
the production but were turned down. "We have done our best for today, but
it has to go according to legal procedures, so we will wait," said Warin
Niemsakul, a lawyer for the activists. ###
