Things haven't that much since I've left. Be that as it may... the list brought up
something earlier today that I'd like to pursue. It's the bottom line of why I'm here
at this list serve.
It's this bottom line... the meaning of ecofem as it applies to all life, not to just
us squawking humans and our petty ways.
I came to ecofem by way of deep ecology but not from Arne the man. I came here by way
something inherent that I knew must be real and true when I was very young. And though
I cannot put a name or face to it, I know that ecofem holds promise for all life in
the wake of legitimate human madness. Of all the human madness, deep ecology and
ecofem (both under the academic discourse of radical ecology) 'feel' hopeful, if hope
can be found.
My relationship with the earth, spiders, bugs, plants (big and small), knowledge of
cells, atoms, waterfalls, creeks, rocks, animals (wild and tame), and gentle human
beings of various size, shape, and color have brought me here. These life forms I've
found so much more meaningful than my family's insane bigotry or the church, schools,
and society that I grew up in and continue to live. These institutions have only
served to encourage my immediate family's bigotry, like a spray can filled with cfc's,
the early part of my life bred enviro threatening molecules that I, at the age of
maybe 10, inherently knew were destructive. It doesn't take a brain surgeon, PhD,
philosopher, or any label we choose to give ourselves to know these things. Yet very
few care to notice, instead
choosing to propel damned cfc's. In fact, our labels often give us cause to 'not know'
and claim ignorance.
I feel it's important to note that I did not come to ecofem by way of feminism,
although I have been in some of the most ridiculous situations with institutions and
men attempting to silence me, or refuse me a loan or other services (including
medical) based on my sex. I've had to thwart off physical, life threatening attacks,
theft at gunpoint, and other incomprehensible and quite common events of blatant
sexism. Why are women considered easy victims? I didn't become an activist through
feminism. There is an air of separatist about feminist activism. It doesn't fit into
the biological, ecological part of ecofem for me. Although I appreciate my sisters
(male and female) defending these things, I still consider the ways we exert pressure
in any form as human madness.
I don't want the definitions of success that men in my society currently have. It is
destructive. Joe, how can we change this?
