U.S. seeks fishing subsidies curb

WASHINGTON (AP) - Upcoming global trade negotiations should seek to
eliminate harmful government fishing subsidies, the Clinton administration
said Friday, arguing they encourage over-fishing of the world's oceans. The
U.S., joined by Australia, Iceland, New Zealand and the Philippines, will
propose a curb on fishing subsidies at an environmental meeting in Geneva
sponsored by the 134-nation World Trade Organization, the administration
said. The administration hopes those talks Monday and Tuesday will lead to
landmark environmental protections as part of a new round of global trade
negotiations, scheduled to be launched later this year. See full story
