Since I was around when Ms. came to be, I feel able to comment.
At the time many women decided that, if men didn't have to announce in
their address whether or not they're married, then neither should women.
Ms. is supposed to avoid identifying us as either married or unmarried.

Hi Folks!
Two thread I would like to comment on. I use Ms because it is the
only one of the three that applies. I am married, but retained my name,
therefore I am not a Miss, and Mrs. would indicate my mother. Since I
live in a rather conservative part of the country (South Georgia), many
people will either use Mrs or Miss (or neither), but I usually don't
correct them unless it is someone I will be having frequent contact with.
If Hillary had kept Rodham, we would have to use Ms, wouldn't we?
I commend Katherine English on her review of ecological systems
and how we effect the environment. In a previous post I mentioned taking
a wholistic view of the problem, and I think you really spelled it out.
The point about looking deeply into the origin of your food is well
taken. I think we should heavily support sustainable agriculture both in
the food and fiber (textile) industries. Farming can be successful as
well as organic, but our government and certainly business are very
resistant to changing over from chemically and destructively based
techniques.
Overpopulation as brought up by RL Curry, along with
overconsumption are the primary driving forces in many (all?) of our
ecological problems. I find this issue especially complicated for
ecofeminists. As feminist we are dedicated to preserving reproductive
rights, including rights to reproduce. I find it horrible that almost
anyone that can afford to have a child can, through medical
advances. In an attempt to concieve and add to our overcrowded world,
they are using up enormous medical resources. In addition, premature and
underdeveloped babies are "saved" at high costs, too. I recognize the
responsibility of a culture to care for the health of the people, but I
wonder how far we should go-especially within the context of
overconsumption. I find parenthood a very complicated issue in light of
the overpopulation issue. Since I am not a parent (nor plan to be), I
would be interested in hearing a parent's (grandparent's) perspective.
What should we do individually about overpopulation?
