You'll probably flame me for this, as it's not EXACTLY your view,
but, to me, language is a function of the society that uses/created it.
Changing the language we use itself does nothing at this point but perhaps
seperate the sexes even more; change what the meaning of it is.
Please, also, don't tell me I can't know what I'm talking about because
I'm not a wom?n, and therefore haven't felt the oppression that causes you
to say 'womyn'. (that happens all too often.) I COMPLETELY understand
feelings that bring this issue up. I agree that in many respects, society
still seems to associate women as 'extensions' (lack of a better word at this
time) of men and this MUST be altered. I only wish to express my view
that woman, women, womyn, wimmin' ( :-> ) all refer to the same thing,
and I'd rather spend my time figuring out how to change the connotations
of each, than how to spell them. :) :) :)

An extremely damaging bill has been introduced by bipartisan members of
the Iowa Senate Commerce Committee at the bidding of Iowa utilities. A
yet unnumbered companion bill has been introduced in the House, as well.
Unfortunately, the bill was introduced by Senator Mike Gronstal, once
thought to be friendly to renewable energy. It is critical that members
of the Senate Commerce Commission and the House Commerce and Regulation
Committee hear form their constituents that it is a bad idea to repeal
the renewable energy mandate as well as the policy statement in Iowa
statute which encourages the development of renewable electricty. In
addition, all Iowa citizens should call their representatives and
Senator, as well as the chairs of both committees. The general

These bills not only repeal the 1983 law that requires Iowa
investor-owned utilities to build 100 megawatts of renewable electircity
wind, biomass, hydropower (one-tenth the size of an average nuclear power
plant), it removes the renewable electricity preference form statute.
Since then, the Iowa utilities have been dragging their feet in
committing to build any renewable projects, and now they are trying to
repeal this inmpotant law. It is critical that the bills be stopped. If
possible, visit your legislator in both houses and tell them to vote no.
If you cannot visit, call your representative and tell them:
* Don repeal the 1983 renewables mandate. I support renewable
energy because it will bring economic and environmental benefits to Iowa.
* Stop renewable energy dollars form leaving Iowa to buy out-of
-state fuel. Renewables will provide a new property tax base, create
jobs in rural areas, and provide additional income to farmers.
*Renewable technologies are competitively priced, especially when the
entire live cycle of a power plant is taken into account.
* Each utility is required to add only 2% of its new power from
renewables. This will help diversify theri energy system and make them
more competitive in the future.

NOTE: This bill has been passed out of committee and it looks as though
it is going to be rushed through the senate and the house. So please
call your representative NOW. If this thing passes it will not only distroy
alternative energy in Iowa but set a precedent for the rest of the states.
