Such separate forces compete, often destructiovely with scarce resources. Planners need to incorporate a sustainable approach as a catalyst for change to provide a fertile opportunity to improve our cities. The Conference aims to bring together professionals and practitioners in a wide range of disciplines to exchange ideas and identify best policies for a viable urban environment in the new millennium. Contributions will address many interrelated aspects of the urban environment from transport and mobility to social elements including the effect of economic development. Papers presented at the Conference will cover three main groups: 1. Research Studies 2. Case Studies 3. Practitioners Reports They include urban planning and design; relationship with traffic; public transport; reuse of buildings; the importance of planning; social factors such as housing, crime, safety and public spaces and other topics relevant to the Conference objectives. LOCATION AND DATES ------------------------------------------------------------- The Conference will be held from 25 - 27 April 2000. Rio de Janeiro is one of the largest coastal cities in the world, combining beautiful marine scenery with a unique tropical environment. Site of some of the major Brazilian universities, it has a very active scientific community concerned with environmental questions. City, State and national institutions provide support for research and development activities in general, and to this event in particular. TRAVEL ------------------------------------------------------------- Delegates can reach Rio de Janeiro by taking a direct flight to the city where there is an international airport. We suggest that you take a taxi (run by the airport taxi service) from the airport to the hotel which is conveniently situated near to the conference venue. CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS ----------------------------------------------------------------- The proceedings of the conference will be published to a high standard by WIT Press and will be available to delegates at the Conference. The Proceedings will also be distributed worldwide through the international book trade. MINI-DISPLAY FACILITIES --------------------------------------------------------------- Mini exhibition facilities will be available for those firms or organisations wishing to display products, services, hardware software, literature relating to the theme of the conference.
