The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives
(ICLEI) wishes to hire a Secretary General. This person will
join a maturing, successful international agency as its chief
executive officer and primary global representative. The SG
will lead ICLEI in expanding it's international membership
and presence, developing and funding additional programming,
and continuing to build a strong global management team.
The Secretary General will report to the ICLEI Executive
Committee, which consists of 21 local government representatives
elected by the ICLEI Council for two or three-year terms. The
Executive Committee sets policy and approves annual budgets
and work plans. The ICLEI Charter defines the Secretary General
as the "third body" of the organization and provides for a strong
CEO mandate and authority. ICLEI is an international association
of local governments dedicated to the prevention and solution of
local, regional, and global environmental problems through local
action. Over 300 cities, towns, counties, and their associations
from around the world, are Members of the Council. ICLEI was
launched in 1990 as the international environmental agency for
local governments under the sponsorship of the United Nations
Environment Programme, the International Union of Local
Authorities (IULA), and the Center for Innovative Diplomacy.
ICLEI presently operates offices in eight countries with 80+ staff
and an annual budget of US$7 million. The strongest candidates will
have successful senior or executive management experience in an
international non-profit development agency; a strong understanding
of local government policy-making on infrastructure planning, air

The successful candidate will have a degree in a relevant discipline
(environmental science, environmental engineering, etc.), and a

technical expertise in at least one environmental issue area. Experience

The Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NPIRG)
is hiring two researcher/writers for the summer. They will
Update, re-write and layout the Single Mother's Survival Guide,
an NSPIRG publication written for single mothers facing
economic and political obstacles in Nova Scotia. The researcher
would be responsible for researching information for all the
existing chapters of the guide as well as creating new chapters,
updating the guide and putting together a revised publication to
be printed in the fall of 2000. There will also be some regular
office hours/duties expected. NPIRG is a student funded
and directed non-profit, non-partisan, and non-governmental
organization that focuses on environmental and social justice issues.
Its working groups are Eco-Action, Economic Justice, Humans
Against Homophobia (HAH!), Animal Liberation Collective,
Womyn's Health Collective, Peace Action Group and Cinema
PIRGatory. The successful candidate must possess a minimum of

ICRAF, KENYA SEEKS A FORESTRY SCIENTIST
FOR WORK IN UGANDA
 
The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICFRAF)
based in Nairobi, Kenya is recruiting both a Participatory Tree
Domestication and a Biodiversity Scientist ICRAF is an international
research organization supported by the Consultative Group on
International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). It works in more
than 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and has an
annual budget of about US$22 million provided by more than 35
donor organizations. ICRAF's ultimate purpose is to improve human
welfare by reducing poverty, increasing cash income, improving food
and nutritional security, and enhancing ecosystem resilience in the
tropics, through improved agroforestry systems. The Programme
Under a USAID Forest Biodiversity Project, the International center
for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) seeks to appoint a developmentally
oriented person to undertake research on participatory tree domestication
and tree biodiversity around the Mabira Forest Reserve in Uganda. The
scientist will be based nearby in Kifu at the Forest Research Institute.
The person is required to undertake the necessary research and
development activities to achieve the overall goal of the project to
improve the conservation of on-farm biodiversity in Kigezi and Mabira
Forest buffer zones. Specifically they would carry out comprehensive
on-farm tree inventories around the Mabira Forest and relate these
to existing forest surveys to generate appropriate baseline indices
of tree diversity on-farm and in the forest.; use the completed
characterization report listing various forest stakeholders, their
problems and pressures with regards to the forest to identify suitable
agroforestry interventions, to enhance on-farm tree diversity and
increase farmers' incomes.
 
The successful candidate will have an ability to work in a productive
manner with a range of partners and to understand the needs of
farmers; have preferably a Ph.D. (or at least an MSc) in agroforestry,
biodiversity, conservation, environmental studies, tree domestication
or a related field; and, have a strong publication record in research or
development. The person should have at least five years practical research
work which incorporates some management experience, and have
fluency in English, with excellent communication skills (verbal and
written). The initial contract is for 2 years from September 2000,

in the intensively cultivated highlands of Eastern Africa. AHI
catalyses activities using a community-based, problem-oriented
approach which includes biophysical, socio-economic and policy
components. Technically the position is within both CIAT's Sustainable
Systems Project and ICRAF's Development Division, which will
share technical supervision, however ICRAF will administer the
position. The technical advisor will provide technical support on
participatory research for NRM to AHI's principal implementers
(research teams in Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania and
Uganda) and develop/use tools and concepts that draw, as appropriate,
on the experience of CIAT and ICRAF among others. Requirements
for the position include a Ph.D. or equivalent in agronomy or related
discipline with a farming systems perspective * A minimum of five
years experience in participatory research and working with the NARS
of a developing country; and, have strong interpersonal skills and
experience in institutional innovation. French desired but not mandatory.
