TITLE:   Director of Conservation Science

SUPERVISOR:  Director of Conservation Operations

LOCATION:  Illinois Field Office

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Director of Conservation Science works to incorporate the best
available conservation science into The Nature Conservancy of Illinois’s
land and water conservation programs around the state. The Director
supports Area science and program staff in resolving critical science
issues including how to measure the effectiveness of conservation
strategies on ecological and human communities.  At a statewide level,
the Director plays a critical role in ensuring that sound conservation
science informs priority setting, site selection, strategy development,
ecoregional and site planning and other decisions. The Director is
responsible for engaging external conservation scientists and research
institutions as partners in the work of The Nature Conservancy of
Illinois, and serves as a liaison with The Nature Conservancy’s regional
and Home Office science and stewardship staff. The Director of
Conservation Science reports to the Director of Conservation Operations.

DUTIES:

1. Through leadership and teamwork, support Area science and program
staff in resolving critical science issues including how to measure the
effectiveness of conservation strategies that are aimed at improving the
viability of terrestrial and aquatic species and communities, as well as
promoting a positive relationship and acceptance with local human
communities.

2. Assist and provide leadership to priority setting, site selection,
strategy development, ecoregional and site-level planning as well as
other decisions (e.g., government relations, protection, and
development) at the statewide level by ensuring such decisions are
informed by the best available conservation science.

3. Engage conservation scientists and research institutions as partners
in the work of The Nature Conservancy of Illinois. Coordinate external
research initiatives at key Conservancy sites.  Serve as liaison to The
Nature Conservancy’s regional and Home Office science and stewardship
staff.

4. Represent scientific perspectives to various cmmittees and teams, and
participate in the allocation of resources, conflict resolution, and
ongoing communications among Areas and with statewide staff.

5. Initiate and coordinate statewide teams to address issues such as
ecological restoration and stewardship, strategy assessment, site
conservation planning, measures of success, and adaptive management.

6. Manage the Conservation Science budget and supervise statewide
Conservation Science staff (currently an aquatic ecologist). Hire
consultants as necessary to meet needs for specific scientific
expertise.

7. Secure and allocate research funds to address conservation science
issues of statewide priority.

8. Provide or coordinate training opportunities for scientists on staff,
and volunteers as appropriate.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Graduate degree in ecology, conservation biology, or related field of
conservation science, and at least five years successful work
experience; knowledge and work experience with both aquatic and
terrestrial ecosystems strongly preferred.

2. Strong applied ecology skills, including the ability to understand a
broad range of issues related to the management of ecosystems throughout
Illinois and the Midwest.

3. Demonstrated ability to develop programs, work as a team member and
leader, establish partnerships with diverse interests, and act as a
resource for designing and implementing strategies to accomplish complex
conservation goals through site-based action.

4. Excellent communication skills, with demonstrated writing ability and
public speaking experience.

5.   An appreciation of the Illinois landscape and the state's diverse
rural and urban cultures.

6. Understanding of and commitment to The Nature Conservancy's goal of
biological diversity preservation.

7. Willingness to work unusual hours and on weekends when necessary;
willingness to travel.
