Subject: A New Graduate Program

------------------

Dear SWIP Members,

The Philosophy department at Binghamton University (SUNY) announces a
new
graduate program.

The Binghamton University's Graduate Concentration in Social, Political,
Ethical, and Legal Philosophy (SPEL) offers beginning and advanced
graduate students a unique opportunity for graduate study in Philosophy.
Through graduate seminars and individual instruction, graduate students
can study classical, modern, and contemporary topics and texts in areas
of
social and political philosophy, ethical theory and applied ethics, and
the philosophy of law.

The SPEL concentration offers graduate students training across the full
range of these subfields of philosophy; moreover, SPEL particularly
emphasizes mastery of the intersections of these subfields. For example,
students may wish to concentrate their studies between political
philosophy and metaethics in questions of contemporary debates
concerning
citizenship, nationhood, and rights; between applied ethics and the
philosophy of law in questions of environmental justice or the
intersection between bioethics and legal norms; between social theory
and
feminist ethics in questions of recognition and redistribution. Applied
ethics - environmental ethics, medical/bio-ethics, and philosophy and
economics ("business ethics") are a central component of the SPEL
program.
With several specialists in applied ethics among the SPEL faculty, this
program will be particularly attractive to those seeking specialized
training.

Two other aspects of the SPEL concentration are particularly worthy of
mention. First, SPEL requires that students acquire a solid grounding in

the history of Western philosophy, guided by the conviction that such
grounding is a pedagogical and professional prerequisite for attaining
real competency in philosophy. The SPEL faculty includes specialists in
the history of philosophy, offering graduate students the resources they
need to acquire this competency. Second, the SPEL concentration urges
graduate students to familiarize themselves with both "analytic" or
Anglo-American and "continental" or European approaches and texts across
the spectrum of social, political, ethical, and legal philosophy. Again,
this expectation is guided by the conviction that professional
preparation
requires a full training in the full range of currents of contemporary
philosophical work.

THE SPEL CONCENTRATION has been approved by Binghamton University. Final
approval by the New York State Education Department will follow shortly.
THE SPEL CONCENTRATION in philosophy is now accepting applications for
new
graduate students for the Fall of 2001. Graduate teaching fellowships
are
available for qualified applicants.
