BOTANIST – Wyoming Natural Diversity Database (University of Wyoming)
The WYNDD Botanist advances the understanding of Wyoming’s unique flora, with a
special focus on native, rare, and endemic species. This position has two
primary areas of responsibility: ensuring the maintenance, enhancement, and
distribution of essential botanical information to a wide range of partners,
and driving externally funded research projects that expand knowledge of
Wyoming’s flora.
By communicating with external partners, consulting other WYNDD staff,
acquiring and manipulating datasets, and performing original research and
scholarship, the WYNDD Botanist creates, maintains, and refines a suite of core
products that collectively describe plant taxa and their habitats in Wyoming in
ways that are useful to WYNDD partners. All core products are served to
partners via the WYNDD database and web applications, requiring close
coordination between the Botanist and WYNDD database and information
specialists. The Botanist is responsible for determining and communicating
priority information needs to the WYNDD Director and other researchers, and for
collaborating with research staff and partners to acquire support and funding
to fill those needs.
The taxonomic purview of the WYNDD Botanist encompasses vascular and, ideally,
nonvascular plants, with the possibility of extending into lichen and fungi as
time and demand allow.
Minimum qualifications are a MS degree in Botany, Plant Sciences, Ecology, or a
related field; 3 years of relevant experience; and a valid U.S. driver’s
license with a motor vehicle record compliant with UW policy.
The WYNDD Botanist is expected to reside in or near Laramie, Wyoming, and
maintain an office in the WYNDD suite on the University of Wyoming campus.
Starting salary will be $65,000-$72,000 plus benefits annually depending on
experience and qualifications. Funding for this position includes 30% from
external funds acquired by the Botanist as grants, contracts, or other research
agreements.
