Hello, ECOLOGgers,

We're seeking a science writer, contracted through University of Guam, to help
me get caught up on delivering reports and publications from our recent work.
This job can be done from anywhere. Please forward to any contacts that might
be interested. Thanks in advance for sharing.

Seeking Subject Matter Expert: Science Writer (Invasive Reptiles) for
University of Guam and USDA National Wildlife Research Center

What is needed:
A Subject Matter Expert (SME) in invasive reptile research and management with
extensive experience in scientific publication is required to remotely support
the activities of the University of Guam and USDA National Wildlife Research
Center location on Guam, where we conduct basic research and develop tools and
techniques for the management of invasive brown treesnakes on Guam.

Scope of Work:
The purpose of this announcement is to recruit an expert science writer to
assist the USDA Principal Investigator (PI, Dr. Shane Siers) in completing
technical reports and scientific journal publications of the results of studies
already completed or currently in progress.

Requirements:

  * PhD in a field related to herpetology or invasive reptile research and
management (MSc with an extraordinarily strong publication history may be
considered).
  * These duties can be completed from any geographic location with
high-quality internet access. However, the applicant must be willing and able
to perform regular communications in real time with the PI (MS Teams) during
normal working hours on Guam (8am-5pm Mon-Fri ChST/GMT+10)
  * Must have a proven track record of first-authorship of scientific journal
articles and technical reports (citation list required) in the fields of
herpetology, invasive species biology, wildlife damage management, or related
fields.

Preferred qualifications:

  * Strong knowledge of modern statistical analyses and computer programs,
especially generalized linear modeling and R.

Character of duties:

  * The primary responsibility of the SME is to prepare technical reports and
scientific journal articles based on research that is already completed or in
progress. In most cases, the PI would be first author, but the applicant would
handle draft writing, preparation for submission, and corresponding author
roles.
  * While the SME would already have experience in herpetology and scientific
publication, they would be expected to spend the first month of the contract
familiarizing themselves with >40 years of research into the biology, ecology,
behavior, and management of invasive brown treesnakes on Guam as well as other
invasive reptiles globally.
  * If mutually agreeable, we would endeavor to schedule 1-2 trips to Guam
for on-the-ground familiarity and to attend annual Brown Treesnake Technical
Working Group meetings (Novembers) and/or other appropriate venues (e.g.,
Marianas Islands Conservation Conference).
  * Upon adequate progress in addressing the backlog of publication
requirements, the SME may be involved in the preparation of new research
protocols and lead individual projects as Study Director and publish as first
author (if desired, not required).
  * The expected commitment would be equivalent to a full-time appointment
for one year. Reduced effort may be negotiated once the current backlog has
been addressed.
