The Ponisio lab at the University of Oregon and the Warren lab at Oregon State
University seek two highly motivated and collaborative postdoctoral scholars to
join an interdisciplinary project funded to develop monitoring technologies to
monitor pollinator populations. The project is in collaboration with The
National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), Cannabis for
Conservation and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. These
positions offer an exciting opportunity to contribute to developing non-lethal
monitoring methods for pollinators and studying bumble bee ecology.

Position 1: Pollinator Sensor Systems Development (start date fall 2025)

  * Focus: Developing and deploying computerized sensor arrays to monitor
pollinator activity, movement, and density.
  *   Responsibilities:
     * Design, optimize, and field-test sensor systems.
     * Develop machine learning methods for insect detection and rare bee
identification.
     * Analyze sensor-generated data to improve system performance and
validate accuracy.
     * Co-lead field crew to conduct field tests.
     *   Lead resulting publications.

Position 2: Pollinator Population Modeling (start date as early as spring 2025)

  * Focus: Studying bumble bee population distribution, movement patterns,
and habitat use in Northern California.
  *   Responsibilities:
     * Co-lead field crew to conduct field studies to track bumble bees using
QR-codes and sensor systems.
     * Fit spatial explicit population models to analyze population dynamics.
     *   Lead resulting publications.

Required Qualifications

  * Ph.D. in data science, ecology, entomology, conservation biology, or a
related field.
  * Strong analytical skills and experience in data management and
statistical analysis.
  * Record of leading first-author publications.
  * Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in
multidisciplinary teams.
  * Commitment to fostering inclusivity and diversity in the sciences.
  * Prior experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  * Demonstrated ability to conduct field research in remote and variable
outdoor environments, including coordinating and navigating survey activities
across multiple sites.
  * Experience leading and training field teams, managing schedules, and
ensuring effective communication with diverse stakeholders.
  * Flexibility and self-motivation to adapt to changing conditions and work
collaboratively in group settings, including interacting with private
landowners and maintaining professional relationships.

Additional Requirements For Position 1:

  * Ability to participate in-person for weekly lab meetings at Oregon State
University, Corvallis, preceding and following field seasons.
  * Interest or background in computer vision and/or machine learning.

Additional Requirements For Position 2:

  *   Population modeling experience (i.e., mark-recapture, N-mixture,
occupancy).
  * Ability to participate in-person for weekly lab meetings at the
University of Oregon, Eugene, preceding and following field seasons.
  * Preferred: Expertise in pollinator ecology.
