This full-time post is offered for three years in the first instance and is based in the Centre for Sustainable Water Management in the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC), Lancaster University. The post is research-focussed for the initial 3-year period and provides an ideal opportunity for a committed research scientist to build a strong research portfolio through winning research grants and disseminating the results of that research in research publications and through policy-related research and industrial collaborations. Success in developing the portfolio will form the basis for considering a continuing appointment.
You will join the Centre for Sustainable Water Management (CSWM) - one of five research-led Centres in the Lancaster Environment Centre. CSWM focuses on research and knowledge transfer in water-related areas in the evolving field of sustainable water management, where drivers such as the EU Water Framework Directive are demanding new ways of devising integrated solutions for water resource and ecosystem management. This is an exciting, fast-growing and demanding area of research - you need to be able to capture and deliver research outcomes that work across disciplines and at a range of scales within the natural sciences; hence coupled measurement/modelling skills will be important for this post. RESEARCH AREA We will consider any strong applicant who can demonstrate an excellent research record in an area of water science. However, to complement the existing strengths of the Centre we wish to encourage in particular applicants with expertise in the following research areas: * Aquatic Processes: especially river channel processes, aquatic chemistry and/or freshwater ecology * Hydrochemical modelling * Predicting environmental change impacts on catchment processes and water resources We are looking for someone with a PhD and postdoctoral research experience who meets, or is moving towards meeting, the following criteria: * Evidence of recent grant success with RCUK and preferably EU * Strong publications record * Evidence of international standing in research field * Evidence of end user funding * Evidence of interdisciplinarity in water science research Excellent opportunities exist within the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) to build collaborations with staff in Environmental Science, Biological Science and Geography in areas such as environmental modelling and uncertainty analysis, groundwater-surface water interactions, soil-water interactions, aquatic chemistry, and ecosystem processes. The co-location of, and collaboration with, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in LEC adds strengths in lake ecosystem processes and contaminant transport processes - including microbiological processes. You will be expected to develop the opportunities to: * Build your own research team in your specific area of expertise * Develop new postgraduate and post-experience training in sustainable approaches to water management * Act as Deputy Director of CSWM * Work with and secure funding from end users of your research area through knowledge exchange and technology transfer activities supported by LEC's Enterprise and Business Partnerships group The successful applicant will be appointed on the academic salary scale (£30002 - 38685) at a point that will depend on qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date for the post is as early as possible in 2006 and will be for 3-years in the first instance. In this period, emphasis will be on the development of a strong research portfolio consistent with the development strategy for CSWM but with expectation of postgraduate supervision and opportunity to develop of Masters level training programme/s in sustainable water management. Guidance on what are seen as essential and desirable attributes in applicants for this post is given in the attached table. Please use this table in deciding whether to apply. Applications should include full curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of three referees whom we may contact for short-listed candidates.
