WAGE: $10.46 per hour CLOSING DATE: April 30, 2006 LOCATION OF POSITION: Southeastern region of MO with travel extending from SE to NE Regions. HOURS: TBA, may include overnight trips, and long days in the field. Phone (573) 222-2432, Fax (573) 222-3221 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Forest field sampling including mensuration and inventory data collection, coring and aging trees, data entry and analysis, literature reviews, tree and herbaceous plant ID, ability to work long hours in harsh working environments under varying conditions and difficult circumstances, ability to carry 30 pounds over long distances. Applicant will collect, organize and summarize data and information used by biologists. Applicant will assist with literature searches and summarizations, maintain vehicles, field equipment, and perform other duties as required. Applicant must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department staff, other conservation agencies, and the general public. Applicant will assist biologist with field and office duties. QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer biology graduate student or biology major above junior standing. Applicant must have plant taxonomy and identification experience. Experience with forestry and vegetation field sampling required. Ability to use a compass, forestry sampling equipment, operate a motor vehicle while towing a trailer, have or obtain a Missouri Operators license by the date of employment. Applicant must have the ability to operate power hand tools. Applicant must be a self-starter and have the ability to work with minimal or no supervision. Knowledge of floodplain forest plant and animal communities preferred. SPECIAL ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Familiarity with a personal computer, Word, Excel, Power Point, SAS or Sigma Plot, literature database software, and database management. Knowledge of GIS software preferred but not required. Familiarity with database management and Windows based computers systems. Familiarity of literature searching and reviews a must. Knowledge of the Mississippi River System preferred but not required. Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment. Ability to occasionally work weekends and holidays. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: The Department of Conservation will hire only United States Citizens and aliens authorized to work in the United States.
