NOW HIRING FIELD RESEARCH TECHNICIAN(S): Behavioral ecology of northern grasshopper mice
We are seeking one or two highly motivated field biologists to participate in a study of northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). Study sites primarily include prairie dog colony complexes and adjacent short grass prairie in southwest Kansas (Cimarron National Grassland), and to a lesser extent in southeast Colorado (Comanche National Grassland) and northeast Wyoming (Thunder Basin National Grassland). Moderate to extensive travel will be involved. Work will involve live-trapping rodents at a series of trap grids in different habitats, tracking individual animals equipped with radio telemetry collars, monitoring artificial rodent dens, and measuring habitat variables. Work will also involve anesthetizing animals to collect blood and ectoparasite (flea) samples. The duration of fieldwork is expected to be from early May to mid-August (possibly with an additional week or two). Salary will be $1,200/month. Housing will be provided in the form of a 2-BR apartment in Elkhart with all modern amenities. Desired qualifications include ability to work an irregular schedule with long hours in the field as a member of a team, and experience live-trapping and identifying small mammals. Technicians must be independent, self-motivated, and able to solve problems in the field.
