DUTIES: The incumbent is responsible for maintenance, administration and 
coordination of fellowship programs at the
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). Fellowship programs 
include positions for Interns, Graduate
Student Fellows, Post-doctoral Fellows and Visiting Scientists to conduct 
research and education in the environmental
sciences. The incumbent’s responsibilities include developing, maintaining 
and updating procedures of the SERC
Fellowship program, including advertisement, application, review, award 
and evaluation of the fellowships; recruitment of
minority and majority applicants; processes all fellowship applications to 
SERC from both individuals and from
Smithsonian’s Office of Fellowships and Grants (OFG); answers inquiries 
from applicants regarding status of their
applications; acts as liaison with scientific Fellowship Review Committee 
and S.I. OFG; organizes Intern group
programs; oversees Residential Dormitory program; acts as liaison between 
Interns and Scientist Advisors; reviews and
summarizes participant evaluations and recommends improvements in program; 
develops fundraising proposals to
agencies, foundations, corporations and individuals for financial support.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience 
equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Specialized experience is defined as experience which has equipped the 
applicant with the particular knowledge, skills
and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and 
which is typically in or related to the work of the
position as described above. Applicants may also qualify if they possess 
one (1) full year of graduate level education or
superior academic achievement in a curriculum that is qualifying for the 
position to be filled. A combination of
qualifying education and experience may be used to meet the qualification 
requirements. Applicants may also qualify if
they can provide evidence of superior academic achievement based on class 
standing, grade-point average, or
membership in a national scholastic honor society. For additional

Applicants who wish to qualify based on education completed outside the 
United States, must be deemed
equivalent to higher education programs of U.S. institutions by an 
organization that specializes in the
interpretation of foreign educational credentials. This documentation is 
the responsibility of the applicant and
should be included as part of your application package.

In addition to the qualifications described above, applicants will be 
further evaluated by Selective and Quality Ranking Factors. Applicants are

1. Ability to administer a Fellowship Program
2. Knowledge of recruitment methods for an educational program.
3. Ability to develop funding proposals.
4. Skill in communicating with diverse groups.

This is federal position, which requires U.S. citizenship.
