VOLUNTEER POSITION: Black bear research

STUDY: Urban black bear ecology 

JOB DESCRIPTION and DUTIES: 

One volunteer technician needed to assist on an urban black bear ecology 
study in Aspen and Glenwood Springs, Colorado from May 1-August 31 (dates 
somewhat flexible). This is a multiple organizational (USDA-WS-National 
Wildlife Research Center, Colorado Division of Wildlife, and Colorado 
State University) effort to perform research that aids in reducing bear-
human conflict in urban environments. Duties include (but are not limited 
to): trapping, handling and processing of black bears, radio-tracking and 
downloading GPS locations of tagged bears, backtracking and sampling 
anthropogenic and natural food sources used by bears, monitoring 
availability of anthropogenic and natural food sources, public education 
activities, equipment maintenance, and administrative work including data 
entry. Typical work schedule is 10-days-on, 4-days-off. Interested

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Applicant must: 
1) be minimally an undergraduate student in wildlife biology or wildlife 
conservation, or in a related ecology, natural resources or biological 
field,
2) be able to work for long and varying hours in sometimes challenging 
physical conditions, including steep mountainous terrain and inclement 
weather,
3) feel comfortable hiking alone in bear country,
4) have good communication skills and work and interact well with public 
and private land owners,
5) able to work well independently but also work closely with other 
project personnel,
6) be able to follow protocols, including being meticulous in collecting 
and recording data,
7) have strong work ethics and a positive attitude!
8) have a valid U.S. driver’s license
Additional beneficial qualifications include: good map reading and 
orienteering skills (including use of GPS), 4-wheel driving skills, 
ability to operate standard transmission vehicles, and Spanish language 
skills.
 

STIPEND: Approximately $500 monthly, paid as per diem. Housing is provided.
