Director of Intermountain Forest Tree Nutrition Cooperative
and Assistant/Associate Professor of Forest Nutrition and Productivity

The Department of Forest Resources, College of Natural Resources, 
University of Idaho, invites applications for an academic-year, tenure-
track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to 
serve as director of the Intermountain Forest Tree Nutrition Cooperative 
(IFTNC).  The IFTNC is a research cooperative based in the Forest 
Resources Department at the University of Idaho which includes 11 member 
companies or agencies that have forest lands in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, 
and Washington.  IFTNC has been conducting forest nutrition and 
productivity research at the University of Idaho for over 25 years and has 
a strong record of research and technology transfer through both 
publication and workshops.  Information about the IFTNC can be obtained at

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: 
The position is approximately 25% coop science leadership and 
administration, 25% coop outreach and technology transfer, 30% research, 
20% teaching and advising.  

Science Leadership and Administration:  provide leadership, direction and 
supervision for activities of the IFTNC to include leadership and 
strategic planning for cooperative directions, direct liaison with 
cooperative members, budget and financial management of base and add-on 
cooperative projects, and supervision of cooperative staff.  

Service and outreach responsibilities: interaction with cooperative 
members through structured workshops, seminars and individual 
consultations.  Activities also include representation of the coop to 
outside audiences, the college and the university. Additional service to 
the university and professional societies is encouraged. 

Research responsibilities: develop and manage research projects funded by 
cooperative members and develop an externally funded research program on 
forest ecosystem processes related to forest tree nutrition and 
productivity that complements the programs of the cooperative and the 
mission of the Department.  Collaborative work with scientists from a 
range of natural resource disciplines is encouraged. 

Teaching responsibilities: design and deliver one undergraduate 
course/year focused on applied forest management and nutrition and one to 
two graduate courses or seminars/year related to nutrition management and 
processes in managed forest environments.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Completed Ph.D.  Ph.D and/or substantial post-graduate experience should 
be within areas such as applied or quantitative silviculture, forest 
nutrition, vegetation control, or forest soils. Emphasis should be to the 
application of process-based forest science to forest productivity and/or 
nutrition management. Demonstrated ability to compete for external funding 
and the ability to publish research results in refereed journals.  

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated interest and ability in teaching an applied forest management 
and nutrition course;
 skill in verbal and written communication; ability to develop and foster 
relationships with existing and potential coop members; demonstrated 
leadership in planning and implementation of operational level field-based 
experiments in a variety of areas of silviculture- including forest 
nutrition and/or vegetation control; understanding of the economics of 
forest investments; supervisory and administrative experience with 
research program management.
