An Unofficial Description of the Position:
An interesting semi-analytical/technical position is currently available
with the Foreign Agricultural Service working as an international and
domestic agriculture commodity forecaster. The position is responsible for
monitoring agricultural areas of the world, performing analysis, and
presenting current season production forecasts and condition reports. Tools
and data used in the position include satellite imagery data (mostly MODIS,
SPOT, and some AVHRR, Landsat TM), normalized vegetation indexes,
agro-meteorological crop models for hazard, winter kill, growth stage, etc.
We use ESRI GIS ArcMap software, and in-house tools for extraction and
display of extensive meteorology data. Not only that but we publish reports
on the web, provide interesting briefings, work hard to design graphical
representation of numeric data and concepts related to agriculture
monitoring on national scale. The really good analysts design s/w, create
new spreadsheet tools, GIS custom tools, statistical analyze weather station
data, climate data, historical agricultural production data. Regularly read
international news assessing validity and impact of information contained in
agricultural and weather related stories. Stay in contact with overseas
office. The main crops of concern are soybeans, canola, wheat, barley,
corn, cotton, peanuts, and sorghum of the world’s major export/import
countries. Overall it is a very cool job.
