The purpose of this residential position is to:=20 * Teach critical environmental issues using a team-based, interdisciplinary, problem-solving approach. The specific area of course responsibility is Principles of Resource Management, which requires an understanding of the ecological, socio political, economical issues as well as the analytical tools used in the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of terrestrial, living resources.=20 =20 * Lead designated components of the Center's Five-Year Research Plan. Specific research lines/areas for which this position is responsible are: impacts of population growth and urban development on natural resources; biodiversity use and prospecting opportunities; land use trends, urbanization, and resource impacts; tourism development and impact assessment; agriculture impacts on natural resources; soil, vegetation, water resource conditions and impacts in and around protected areas. * Oversee, advise and develop individual student directed research projects that arise from this plan and introduced these students to experiment design as well as statistical applied analysis.=20 * Lead specials groups and Related Business Opportunities at the Center for Sustainable Development Studies and support the administrative development as well as the academic component of such projects.=20 * Ensure the expeditious publication of research results and grant writing. * Provide an academic environment within the context of an interdisciplinary position and take over duties that are not academic but that bring context to the SFS mission in Costa Rica. * Collaborate in activities outside of the academic duties which include: kitchen duties, risk management duties and administrative duties.=20 Qualifications: * Ph.D. in Environmental Science or Natural Resource Management with an emphasis on sustainable development issues. * Bilingual, speaking and technical writing abilities in Spanish & English. * Experience in experiment design and advanced knowledge of applied statistics. Advanced knowledge of statistical packages with capability to teach students in these areas. * Field research experience in water, soil, vegetation and other natural resource conditions, including impacts affecting the quality of those resources related to urbanization, tourism, and agricultural development. Research undertaken in Costa Rica and/or Central/South America preferred. * University-level, interdisciplinary, team teaching experience in natural resource management, environmental studies, environmental science, and/or sustainable development. * Familiarity with: sustainable development and globalization theories and principles; water, soil, vegetation and forest resource management, environmental impact identification and assessment; agricultural development and organic farming practices; land use and protected area planning and management; alternative energy; biodiversity use and prospecting; tourism: and ecotourism.=20 * Good track record of research publications. * Willingness to work flexible hours and live on site at the field station with a small team of permanent staff, groups of US undergraduate students and visiting researchers or programs. * Experience living and working in Costa Rica preferred. * Residential student group management and risk management experience required=20 Start Date: September 5 2007 Compensation and Benefits: Nine Month Contract (September to May) with salary ranging from $22,307.00 to $29,000USD (including Costa Rica salary bonus) depending on experience and qualifications, plus excellent benefits and on-site room and board during the program.
